What is Group Psychotherapy?
Just like individual psychotherapy, it is intended to help people who would like to improve their ability to cope with difficulties and problems in their lives, especially if they face relationship problems with others. While in individual therapy the patient meets with only one person (the therapist), in group therapy the meeting is with a group of 6 to 8 members and one therapist. Group therapy focuses on interpersonal interactions and relationship problems with constructive feedback are addressed during that time.
The aim of group psychotherapy is to help participants in the group to solve there emotional difficulties and to encourage personal development in relationship with others.
During the time of forming a group, the therapist interviews people and determines who can benefit from this kind of therapy and who can have a useful influence on other members in the group.
How does Group Psychotherapy work?
Members of the group share with others, personal issues which they are facing. A participant can talk about events he was involved in during the week, the responses to these events, problems he had tackled, etc... A group member can also share his feelings and thoughts about what happened in previous sessions, and relate to issues raised by other members or to the leader's commands. Other participants can react to his words, give him feedback, encourage, give support or criticism, and share their thoughts and feelings following his story.
The subjects for discussion during group time are not determined by the leader but rise spontaneously from the group. The group can become a source of support and strength in times of stress for individual participants. The feedback someone gets from others about his behavior in the group can make him become aware to maladaptive patterns of behavior, change his point of view and help him adopt to more constructive and effective reactions.
Frequently some of the group members might represent others of their past or current life with whom they have difficulty. During group therapy they have the opportunity to work through these situations in a safe and supportive environment. Group-time can be seen as a laboratory for practicing new behaviors and building ones self-esteem by increasing interpersonal skills.
Handling conflict successfully in relationships, during group time, will help the group members to increase intimacy, closeness and commitment with others. In addition, effective communication skills and healthy behaviors are modeled in group.
The goal for this group is for the participants to integrate all of those new skills that have been acquired, during group time, and to take them outside of the group into their personal relationships for more satisfying interactions with there loved ones.
